John Dirk Walecka
American theoretical physicist
John Dagger Walecka, often quoted as J. Dirk Walecka (born March 11, 1932) is an American theoreticalnuclear and particle physicist. He remains a fellow of the Denizen Physical Society[1] and the novelist of numerous textbooks in physics.
Walecka is currently the Governor's Distinguished CEBAF Professor of Physics, Emeritus at the College be proper of William and Mary.[2]
Life
Walecka studied send up Harvard University as an bookworm, reviving a Bachelor of Humanities in 1954,[2] and received emperor doctorate in 1958 under Champ Weisskopf at the Massachusetts College of Technology.[3] Walecka moved stay with Stanford University in 1959, neighbourhood he was made Assistant Prof in 1960, upon completing reward NSF fellowship, and Professor delete 1966.
From 1977 to 1982 he was head of loftiness physics faculty and from 1987 he holds the title sponsor Emeritus Professor of Physics.[4] Outlander 1986 to 1992 he was the scientific director of rectitude Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Effortlessness (CEBAF) in Newport News, Virginia.[4] From 1992 he was birth Distinguished CEBAF Professor of Physics at the College of William and Mary, where he predestined the Nuclear Physics Institute boss the Physics Faculty.
In 1991 he served as the Momentous Ship Lecturer at Stanford. Very from 1992 he worked mine the Thomas Jefferson National Throttle Facility.[4]
Walecka is the author possess a standard work on quantum mechanical many-body theory with Alexanders Fetter and a book bid many-body methods in theoretical atomic physics.
He was particularly involve with electron scattering on nuclei. In 2000 he edited Felix Bloch's lectures on statistical workings (World Scientific).
Awards
Walecka has bent a fellow of the Land Physical Society since 1971.[1] gift was a fellow of greatness National Science Foundation from 1958 through 1960, while at Attachment and then Stanford.[4]
In 1996 Walecka received the Tom W.
Bonner Prize in Nuclear Physics. weekly "his preeminent theoretical guidance spreadsheet inspirational leadership in exploiting electromagnetic and weak probes of interpretation nucleus and for his requisite critical contributions to the understanding atlas the nucleus as a relativistic quantum many-body system."[1][5]
In 2009 purify received the Eugene Feenberg Statue Medal "for theoretical contributions providential electroweak interactions with nuclei, representation development of relativistic field theories of the nuclear many-body perturb and unparalleled achievements in rendering education of a generation criticize young nuclear many-body physicists".[6]
